The Complete Cost Breakdown for Moving a 1-Bedroom vs 3-Bedroom Apartment in Dubai

The first thing to know about moving a 1-bedroom or a 3-bedroom apartment in Dubai is that it is not the nightmare it’s made out to be – or it doesn’t have to be, anyway. Costs depend on several factors.

How Much ‘Stuff’ do You Have?

The longer we’re in an apartment the more belongings we tend to gather, and some people hold onto things more than others. Whether you’re into minimalism or you’re a little more cluttered you’ll have to do an inventory.

So, do you have much ‘stuff’? And what is it? Furniture and knick-knacks? Mainly clothes? Vinyl records? Musical instruments? China and glass?

The moving company you go to for a quote (and you should get at least a couple for comparison) will want to know this because it affects how easy the move will be. A three-bedroom apartment crammed with furniture can take less time and potentially cost less than a one-bedroom filled from floor to ceiling with old copies of magazines or stacks of vintage Persian rugs. And talking of vintage, if you’ve got a wine cellar, which may not be a cellar at all but a spare bedroom, that will take a bit of moving in terms of weight and care.

If it’s a lot of clothes, you can pack them all in boxes or suitcases. Some movers have small pods which you can use but which have to be lifted with a forklift truck – and one thing many people forget when they’re packing is that it’s no use squeezing everything you can into a box or crate, but how are you going to move it?

Collections of beautiful crystal or classic crockery will take time because they are delicate and must be wrapped carefully.

All these things can affect the cost of the move, and while typically a smaller apartment will cost less, be prepared for a surprise if you hadn’t thought about what your stuff consists of.

Are you Doing a Straightforward Move or Storing Things for a While?

In an ideal world you would watch the moving process happen in a single day while you sit comfortably with a drink and a cucumber sandwich, but for various reasons it may have to be staggered, with a period when some or all your stuff sits in storage, awaiting its turn.

Moving and storage in Dubai are often interlinked, and if your precious things are going to be put somewhere for weeks or months, make sure the company has suitable storage pods (preferably wooden and breathable) and an air-conditioned warehouse with enough security so you can relax and know they are in good hands.
