Moving to a new country or even a different city can involve choosing in advance when you don’t really know what it’s like. When a move is for a job, for instance, you may have looked for the vacancy, the opportunity, and having succeeded in getting it, you’re left thinking, okay that’s the career angle taken care of, but what about day-to-day life?
What is Abu Dhabu Like in General?
Abu Dhabi is the capital and largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates, an emirate being a place ruled by an emir (a prince). The UAE is unique in the world. While Europe has all that history and is generally quite sophisticated, and the USA is a relatively young country with a reputation as the home of the go-getter, the UAE also has a long and fascinating history but has been completely transformed by the oil industry and the wealth it has brought. The UAE has used this incredible recent income to create a rather futuristic world of luxury built on the foundations of a culture that values family and hospitality very highly.
Because of the wealth and the opportunities to share in it, the UAE has attracted a new population from all corners of the earth, eager to live the good life in the sun and in relative safety.
Abu Dhabi is less frenetic than Dubai, the name that springs to mind most readily when we think about this part of the world. Abu Dhabi has a greater sense of history, with its Grand Mosque making a grand statement about the city’s religious heritage, while museums offer the visitor (and the resident) reminders that the 21st century is not everything and that people were here millennia ago living very different lives.
But that description of Abu Dhabi is not one that would appeal to the very young, so selling it to the family before bringing them into the Aby Dhabi lifestyle needs to be approached thoughtfully.
Natural Beaches
It is a common misconception that everything in the UAE is manmade, but there are natural beaches and Abu Dhabi has some beautiful ones. Not that children are particularly bothered about what is natural and what isn’t, of course. But a beach is a beach and it’s a place to have fun.
Best Areas in Abu Dhabi for Families
With theme parks as well as natural attractions, somewhere like Yas Island can be great for a young family. You won’t have to whisk them off to Disneyworld when they’ve got theme parks right around the corner. And it’s not just sand; there are green spaces (harder to do around here but the Abu Dhabi authorities make sure they’re looked after) and some excellent schools and health facilities.
A little quieter and less expensive is Khalifa City, which may be more attractive for parents but is still fun for kids.
Then there is Al Raha Beach and Al Rahm island, or the more traditional Al Mushrif. All of these areas offer spacious homes as well as the attractions – homes that other parts of the world simply don’t have room for, but which were designed on what you might call a blank canvas, rather than squeezed into existing architecture.
